        • SYNOPSIS

Birdman follows a famous actor’s struggle to reclaim control of his life and career after portraying an iconic superhero. Riggan Thompson mounts a Broadway adaptation of Raymond Carver’s "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love," which he rewrote to give his character more time in the spotlight. It is his hope that the play will help him regain the respect he appears to have lost when he artistically "sold out" by playing Birdman, an aspiration that is attacked as a purely vain pursuit. An accident gives Riggan the chance to replace a weak actor with a much better choice, and he must learn to share the spotlight and grapple with a challenge to his artistic vision. Adding an additional layer of conflict is his constant battle with an inflated ego and his troubled relationship with his drug-addicted daughter and assistant Sam, who constantly reminds him of his irrelevance. The film’s cinematography creates the illusion of having been shot in a single take, giving it a raw element that allows the actors to control the movement and pace of the film.

          Alejandro González Iñárritu

González Iñárritu is the first Mexican director to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director and by the Directors Guild of America for Best Director. He is also the first Mexican born director to have won the Prix de la mise en scène or best director award at Cannes (2006), the second one being Carlos Reygadas in 2012. His five feature films Amores perros (2000), 21 Grams (2003), Babel (2006), Biutiful (2010), and Birdman (2014), have gained critical acclaim worldwide including two Academy Award nominations.
